Help tear down the Columbus Monument in NYC
Columbus Circle guards the 59th st entrance of Central Park. The circle was originally created to aid in traffic and in the middle, there is a large monument which was a gift from Italy in 1892. The monument is dedicated to Christopher Columbus and is inscribed in Italian.
The removal of this monument has been discussed and shut down multiple times. In 2020 the removal of multiple other monuments around the U.S. sturred up a conversation about its removal but was quickly shut down by governor Cuomo.
Some Italian Americans spoke against its removal as they felt Columbus represented their heritage. The problem with this thinking is the erasure of his detrimental impact on Americas Indigenous community.
There have been great strides to remove the romanitilization of Columbus such as renaming Columbus day to Indiginous peoples day, so why can't we ban together to make this happen? We have a chance with a new Governer; take a stance and help NYC become a better place.
