Help Support Safer Off-Leash Parks in Edmonton with Clear Right-of-Way Signs
The Issue
Give Off-Leash Dogs the Right of Way in Off-Leash Parks with signs
Designated off-leash areas exist so dogs can run free, play, and socialize safely. But too often, conflicts happen when cyclists, joggers, or even owners with leashed dogs pass through and expect off-leash dogs to yield.
This creates real safety concerns:
Off-leash dogs can’t always avoid fast-moving bikes or runners.
Leashed dogs in off-leash parks can feel trapped or defensive when approached by free dogs, leading to preventable fights and stress.
Without a clear understanding among patrons and users, unnecessary conflict arises between park-goers.
Collisions put everyone at risk — not only could a dog be seriously injured, but cyclists or runners could also be harmed.
We’re asking the City to post clear signage at off-leash areas:
“Off-leash dogs have right of way in this park. Please yield to them and use caution.”
This does not mean dogs may run unchecked — responsible owners still manage their companions and respect others. It simply means that in these designated, special-use areas, everyone should recognize that off-leash dogs and their owners are using the areas provided for them, and be aware of that.
Just like cars must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and cyclists are given priority in bike lanes, dogs deserve that same clear right of way in the very spaces designed for them.
This small request of the City will improve safety for dogs and people, reduce conflict, and remind everyone that these areas are meant for our off-leash dogs to enjoy. Most park goers already act responsibly and respectfully within the park — this petition simply seeks to reinforce that understanding with additional signage to ensure the space is respected by all.
