UNETHICAL laundry issues at the University of Delaware
The Issue
Ever since my freshmen year here at the University of Delaware, there have been issues with our laundry. I've lived in Ray Street, Brown Hall, Sharp Hall, and Kent Hall and ALL of these buildings have had problematic machines and I know this is the case for most dorms here. I've had friends tell me they paid double for their dryer and their clothes still come out soaking wet. It ranges from literal mold to broken dryers to washers melting Tide pods to clothing. At the moment, I live in Kent Hall. When I moved in, I was presented with our only two washers covered in black mold (as shown in the photo). When we made reports about this, it took an entire MONTH for someone to come clean it out. Was this cleaning just a wipe-down? Or were the internal parts of the machine including the pipes also cleaned? Our building has been trying to ask UD to simply replace the 2 washers. With how much we pay, this should not be an issue whatsoever. Yet we are still here almost 3 months into a semester still barely able to wash our clothes in a moldy washer. I know the residents of Kent hall are not the only ones experiencing this lack of care.
Being able to clean your clothing efficiently is a human right, especially when we are paying thousands of dollars to attend this school. Don't even get me started on how the price of laundry was increased by 25 cents. Please let something happen about this issue. Whether it's free laundry or just spending that extra money to replace machines in buildings needing severe TLC. All of the lovely residents at UD would immensely appreciate it.
If change is not made to our laundry here, students will continue wasting money on clothing barely cleaned. We will continue to wash our clothes in mold. We will continue to take our laundry out of the dryer to find it soaking wet still. Nobody wants this.
