Help Stop Trapping on National Wildlife Refuges

Atlanta, GA, United States
Created October 23, 2009

The Issue

Urge your Representative to support banning cruel traps within the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Along with Born Free USA's commitment to keeping wildlife in the wild, comes our commitment to protecting wildlife in the wild. "Wildlife Refuge" conjures images of a safe space that allows wild animals to live without fear of human encroachment.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. A staggering 54% of the refuges within the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) allow trapping on refuge grounds. These traps often do not kill the animal right away, which can remain in the trap for several days, either starving or slowly strangling to death. Trapped animals also die from other predators against whom they cannot defend themselves, or are beaten over the head or shot by the trapper when found.

Wild animals are allowed to be trapped for purposes of commercialized fur use, as well as for sport and recreation. Because traps do not discriminate, they jeopardize threatened and endangered species, such as the bald eagle, which are frequently caught in these traps.

H.R. 3710, the Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act, sponsored by Representative Nita M. Lowey (D-NY), proposes to ban all body-gripping traps - snare, Conibear, and steel-jaw leghold - from being used on National Wildlife Refuges. If passed, the bill would make it illegal to trap on National Wildlife Refuges, thereby creating a safe haven for wildlife to dwell without unnatural, and cruel, threats. But we need your help!

Please contact your Representative today and explain to him or her why you are in support of H.R. 3710. Urge your Representative to support the banning of these cruel traps within the NWRS.

Trapping on National Wildlife Refuges must be stopped. Please contact your Representative today!

Thank you for taking action!
