Help stop the terrible toll of tobacco!

The Issue

Did you know that:

More than 5 million children alive today will die prematurely from smoking-related illnesses?

Nearly every adult who smokes (almost 90 percent) took his or her first puff at or before the age of 18?

Or, that increasing tobacco taxes is an effective way to prevent and reduce smoking, especially among kids?

These research findings and statistics, outlined on fact sheets and in a series of ongoing research reports, can be found here in the Research Center.
Whether you're wondering which brands of cigarettes teens prefer (Marlboro, Camel and Newport, the three most heavily advertised), or how much the tobacco industry spends advertising and marketing its lethal products (more than $13.1 billion per year and more than $35.9 million per day), chances are, we've got the answer, and you'll find it here.

Take Action now: (6 Petitions/Pledge)

1. Call your Senator TODAY!

Talking Points for the call to your Senators:

I hear you will be voting soon on the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act and I strongly encourage you to vote for it.It's time to grant the FDA the authority to regulate the manufacturing, marketing and sale of tobacco products.Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death in America.  It kills more than 400,000 Americans and costs the nation $96 billion in health care bills each year. This legislation would require ingredient disclosure of tobacco products, require larger health warnings and crack down on marketing to kids. Please vote YES on the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act.

2. Tell your Senators to Vote YES on S. 982

Today the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which would grant the Food and Drug Administration authority over tobacco products, was brought forward for consideration by the U.S. Senate.  Please email your senators and ask them to support Senate Bill 982 and to oppose any weakening amendments.

3. Join faith leaders in calling on the Senate to regulate tobacco

Faith leaders are coming together to call on the Senate to pass legislation which would grant the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate tobacco products.  Please add your voice to this effort by sending an email to your Senators to asking that they support this lifesaving legislation.

4. Pass FDA Regulation of Tobacco Products

Tell Congress that it is time to pass bipartisan legislation authorizing the FDA to regulate tobacco products. The food you eat, prescription drugs, and even nicotine gum is regulated by the FDA...but the number one cause of preventable death in the world is not. It is time to change that by passing the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act.

5. Ask President Obama to Make History Again!

We must seize this moment in history to ask President Obama to make history again by pushing the Congress to act on this life-saving legislation.

Fill out the forms below to send an email to President-elect Obama urging him to follow this issue!

6. Sign the Tobacco-Free Pledge

Smoking remains the #1 cause of preventable death in the world. Pledge your support for a world free from the terrible toll of tobacco.

Thanks for taking action in the name of all kids!
