Stop the Tarmac at Coalisland Canal

Stop the Tarmac at Coalisland Canal

The Issue

Coalisland Canal is a haven for wildlife and is enjoyed daily by walkers of all shapes and sizes from both sections of the community.  The canal is home to all sorts of beautiful birds (including kingfishers, owls, swans, ducks, herons, buzzards and cuckoo) and other animals such as otters and roosting (protected) bats.

During Covid lockdowns it provided, and continues to provide, much needed solace and improved the wellbeing and mental health of many people, as a safe peaceful part of the countryside in which to walk. it is used by walkers, dog owners and runners.

It is listed as protected under law as a "historic monument".

Despite protests from landowners and daily users Mid Ulster District Council are ignoring concerns of the local people, and are fast tracking through a budgetary spend of over half a million (£535,000) pounds JUST to Tarmac the lower half of the walkway (from Moor Bridge to the Reenaderry road). They have confirmed they will NOT grit the path, meaning that during frost it will be impassable (which is ironic as the entire stated reason for this is to get more users).  The existing top half of the walkway that was already tarred is crumbling in spots and the council has no interest in fixing the existing potholes.

To be clear, we are not averse to the investment, or to resurfacing (both are only a good thing) however, the tar mac finish is unsuitable due to freezing in the winter.  We have suggested other surfaces to Council.  This requires a common sense approach and engagement with local people.

At a time when our health care system is on its knees, we DO NOT WANT OR NEED THE PATH COVERED IN TAR.  IT WILL MAKE IT UNSUITABLE FOR USE IN THE WINTER WHEN FROZEN.  The Council has confirmed that they will NOT grit it (just erect signs to say "beware of frost") and people will have to walk on the frozen grass instead.  What use is that? It is a waste of public spending, if it makes the path unsuitable.
