Help Stop the ‘Side Hustle’ Tax: Support Sustainable Fashion and Fair Income
The Issue
I was a full-time worker in London who, like many others, has turned to platforms such as Vinted to earn extra money due to the escalating cost of living crisis. However, the government's recent requirement for us to file tax returns on these side hustles is not only burdensome but also discourages a more circular fashion industry and waste reduction through second-hand buying.
Reselling second-hand clothing via apps like eBay, Vinted, and Depop is an essential part of slowing down the fast fashion industry. Fast fashion contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions - approximately 10%. By taxing these reselling of vintage and second hand fashion, the government is inadvertently promoting fast fashion and hindering our efforts towards sustainability.
Moreover, this taxation disproportionately affects those with lower incomes who might rely on selling clothes for additional income. In a time when 14.5 million people in the UK are living in poverty, it seems unjust that those trying their best to make ends meet or get extra cash, are being penalised.
We urge the government not only consider how this taxation impacts individuals financially but also its broader implications on our environment and society's move towards a circular fashion industry.
Please sign this petition if you believe that resellers should be exempt from taxation as they are crucial for both individual survival and environmental conservation during this cost of living crisis.
