The Issue

Avalon Institute has been selling dreams to students in order to get them to attend this school, all for those said students to find out later that it was all a lie. The admissions representatives are told to push the cosmetology program on all students in order to make a higher paying commission. These representatives have told students that the cosmetology program will include everything they are seeking to pursue professionally in their curriculum, they are encouraged to lie to students to any measure because the cost of tuition is $20,000. This school loses staff and admin just as fast as they hire them because corporate has created a hostile environment to the point where no one can voice their concerns without being threatened by higher ups to be fired or have the police called on them. Instructors are not properly trained but are simply thrown into classrooms and told to teach what they know. There have been countless students to drop out of both the cosmetology and Aesthetics programs because they are not being taught anything they came to school for, and they are being reprimanded for requesting to be taught said subjects. Students have been held back from graduating on time and forced to pay a late graduation fee due to staff sending them home for things out of the students control such as having the right supplies for the day, or being out of class to have meetings with other staff members or take tests. Instructors and staff have quit on multiple occasions due to drama within the work place and corporate using favoritism tactics against other staff members. If a staff member does stand up for a students well being, they are threatened with write up’s or unemployment due to their genuine concern for the students. This school is supposed to teach us how to care for all hair types, instead we are only taught to care for one specific race’s hair type and the curriculum gives us one week to learn about “textured” hair. African American/“black” students have been asked by instructors on numerous accounts to teach the class on how to do things such as braid, install weave, and even how to care for their hair types in general because the instructors “don’t know how”. When African American/“black” students are on salon floor days, they are specifically only given African American/“black” clients as well as clients of other race, if they tell anyone they feel uncomfortable performing a service, they will be sent home. Non-black students are rarely given African American/“black” clients and when they voice that they feel uncomfortable performing the service, they are met with grace and understanding and told that they will give the client to someone else, all while getting to stay at school for the day. We are promised to learn hair, skincare, waxing, nails, and makeup, but are only repetitively taught haircuts and color. The school continues to hire instructors with straight hair focused expertise while students are begging to be taught all the subjects that the world of cosmetics has to offer. Students have been lied to by staff due to incompetent communication amongst higher ups. Students have tried to make up missing hours and are later reprimanded for doing so because of “time fraud”. This school’s main goal is to hold students back from graduating on time so that they owe them more money than they signed up to pay for. This program costs $20,000 but does not provide proper tools, necessary products, or even proper break room space. Please help us by signing our petition to stop the racist, fraudulent, unprofessional acts that are being enforced at Avalon Institute.
