HELP SAVE WOODHULL STREET!! Reject traffic direction change on Woodhull Street

Living on Woodhull Street between Columbia St and Hicks Street in Brooklyn has always meant being part of a close-knit and safe community. Our street is a sanctuary where children can play freely, neighbors gather without worry, and everyone feels secure. However, the proposed change in traffic direction threatens to disrupt this peace, posing considerable safety risks for everyone, especially our children.
Changing the traffic direction on Woodhull Street would likely lead to a significant increase in through-traffic. This creates a hazardous environment where the youngest members of our community would be most at risk. Imagine cars speeding down our street with little regard for the safety of pedestrians, many of whom are children. Such a scenario is frightening and unacceptable.
Evidence from similar changes in traffic directions in other neighborhoods has shown that it often leads to increased traffic congestion and accidents. Introducing more vehicles to our street increases the likelihood of accidents involving pedestrians, particularly children who are playing or walking to and from school.
Moreover, the quality of life for residents would significantly decline. Instead of enjoying a peaceful environment, we would be subjected to noise pollution, reduced air quality, and the stress associated with higher traffic volumes. Our neighborhood does not deserve to be transformed into a through-traffic corridor.
Trucks traveling down Hicks Street will also be routed down our block, as it will be their only option. This will ultimately reduce parking, as they will need to remove the corner spots to allow trucks to clear the turn.
We propose maintaining the current traffic direction, ensuring that Woodhull Street remains a safe and tranquil place for all its residents.
We call on the local authorities and decision-makers to listen to the concerns of residents and prioritize the safety and well-being of our community. Please sign this petition to reject the proposal of changing traffic direction on Woodhull Street. The safety and serenity of our neighborhood depend on it.
We strongly encourage all Woodhull Street residents and concerned neighbors to attend the upcoming Community Board 6 meetings to express concerns and advocate for preserving the current traffic pattern:
Community Board 6 Transportation Meetings
Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 PM (Zoom)
June 10 at the Van Alen Institute & via Zoom
Community participation matters, and a strong resident presence will help demonstrate the significant concerns shared by families living on Woodhull Street. Please spread the word to our community! Thank you!
Thank you for your attention and support in protecting the safety and quality of life of our neighborhood.
Formal PowerPoint Proposal from CB6 forthcoming.
Sincerely,
Concerned Residents of Woodhull Street
