Over the years, the University of Alabama has greatly scaled back its Russian program in the Modern Languages and Classics Department. Although the Academic Catalog lists twenty four different Russian classes to be available to students, currently only six are offered. This is mainly due to the fact that there is only one Russian professor, Dr. Andrew Drozd. Due to this lack of faculty, the Russian Program is unable to offer all the classes and satisfy the needs of students. Many students have to be turned away from the program, because there is not enough room for them. Despite requests by students for years, no additional faculty have been added to the program. In its current state, if something were to happen to Dr. Drozd, the program would cease to exist. In order to add more classes and provide students with a more complete education in Russian language and culture, we are asking Dr. Bonner and the University of Alabama to add at least one more faculty member in the Russian Department.
