HELP SAVE THE ENDANGERED SPECIES, ACT PROTECTION FOR THE PHILIPPINE'S FIREFLIES.
The Issue
In Rizal, Philippines, the Masungi Georeserve is dotted with glowing firefly trails, as reported by GMA News two years ago. This news that one of our members observed piqued our interest in some manner. We pondered, "Where have the fireflies disappeared to?"
The distribution of fireflies in the Philippines is extensive. They can even be spotted in urban areas if you're lucky. According to local legend, engkantos inhabit trees that are frequented by fireflies, or alitaptap. People believed that fireflies served or traveled with these extraterrestrial beings. Nonetheless, it is believed that these fireflies in the Philippines are in the process of disappearing, and there are three potential causes. first, because of the destruction of their homes. The conversion of the majority of their grasslands into subdivisions, rice paddies, markets, and mines is the primary cause of their extinction. Second, as a result of human use of chemical insecticides Pesticides are used by farmers to eliminate insects that cause crop damage. It is particularly effective when a large number of pests must be eradicated, but it also kills non-target organisms. This is due to the fact that fireflies lay their eggs beneath paddy fields. Due to human-made chemicals, they will never again be seen. The final cause is the use of artificial lighting at night. To attract mates, fireflies use light. Due to the streetlights and business signs, they can no longer see their partners. This light impedes their ability to reproduce. In addition, it is difficult to find fireflies in urban areas such as Metro Manila due to firefly light pollution. Loss of habitat entails not only the destruction of mangroves but also the maintenance of ecosystems that sustain fireflies. The use of motorboats along the river where they nest is one of the greatest threats to their survival.
Yes, we must consider our needs, but we must also consider all the other creatures we are unwittingly harming, such as the fireflies that once made our world even brighter, captivated our eyes and minds, and enticed children to go outside at night to see them. Consequently, others, particularly animal lovers, are concerned about the extinction of animals. Protecting them will be our greatest contribution to Mother Earth.
Will you help us make a world where fireflies continue to light up even on the darkest nights?
If so, please sign this petition in support of our fireflies, the environment, and future generations.
