Help save Skate Estate from becoming another Car Lot!
The Issue
I began skating at Skate Estate when I was just 13 years old. Growing up, it was a haven, a place where local youth could gather, have fun, and stay out of trouble. Now, at 43, I still find joy in skating there and the numerous health benefits that activities like this foster. I enjoy watching both kids and adults enjoy one of the few positive, substance-free activities that brings our community together. Our skate rink at Skate Estate isn't just a building; it's a cornerstone of our community and has been for decades.
However, the new owners of Skate Estate, the Marchuska Brothers, are planning to shut it down and convert it into yet another car dealership. This isn't just a building change, it's a heartbreaking shift in our community's dynamic. In an area already saturated with dealerships and car lots, this decision seems thoughtless, redundant an economically irresponsible leading to further economic decline within Broome County. More importantly, it strips away a crucial positive environment that supports community wellness activities and cohesion.
Think about the future of our community. Without Skate Estate, families and young individuals will have to travel 45 minutes to the next nearest skate rink. It's not a simple new location, especially for families who cherish the spur-of-the-moment visits that make skating enjoyable and accessible. Not to mention, Skate Estate has been a staple in our region for over 40 years.
The rise in car dealerships in our area has not improved our local economy. Instead, it's leading to a saturation that detracts from our community’s unique identity. Removing community-centric spaces in favor of more impersonal businesses could have serious consequences by accelerating economic and cultural decline. We should focus on preserving and investing in establishments that promote well-being and togetherness, not only for present generations but for future ones too.
We need to tell the establishment owners and local authorities that Skate Estate must remain a community space. A place for growth, learning, and social interaction for people of all ages. Skate Estate offers the community something unique and irreplaceable—the opportunity to connect, be active, and thrive in a safe environment.
Please join me to protect our beloved Skate Estate. By signing this petition, you are standing up for a community's right to maintain its valued spaces and you are opposing the overdevelopment of unnecessary commercial properties. Let's save our skate rink and keep the heart of our community alive. Sign now to make a difference.
