OVER 100 YEARS OF REFINING OPERATIONS AT POINTE-A-PIERRE DOWN THE DRAIN
Trinidad and Tobago is still facing a recession. Closing the refinery and sending home thousands of workers and affecting thousands more will cause severe economical and social hardship. PETROTRIN is about country.
According to www.petrotrin.com (viewed 30.08.2018) "We are one of the largest employers in Trinidad and Tobago with a dedicated workforce of more than 5,000 people." All 5000 (not 1700) employees will be sent home. 3500 contractor employees will be directly affected! Taking into consideration all these employees' families, Mr. Roget estimates approx. 45,000 persons will be directly affected by the closure of Petrotrin's operations.
According to the company, on their webpage (www.petrotrin.com viewed 30.08.2018): Home to the only refinery in Trinidad and Tobago, we pride ourselves on the ability to process a mix of locally produced and imported crude oil. Our refinery sits on an expanse of 2000 acres of land and is located in Pointe-a-Pierre on the west coast of Trinidad along the Gulf of Paria, some 35 miles south of Port-of-Spain. Its strategic location cost effectively supplies the Caribbean, Central America and the United States markets. We are a leading supplier of petroleum products in the CARICOM region.
Taking a look back into the refinery's history, according to the article Memories of Pointe-a-Pierre written by Tony Beaubrun: "The original reason why Texaco decided to buy the Leaseholds properties was because the then Chairman of Texaco had been a major figure in the oil supply chain for the European World War II effort. He, (the then Chairman of Texaco) recognised the value of the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery in supplying both Europe and West Africa (at the time)."
