Help Save Harlem’s Electric Ladybug Community Garden!

The Issue

Please sign this petition to ask our elected officials and the NYC Dept. of Housing Preservation and Development to protect the lot at 237 West 111th Street in Harlem, NYC from development—as it is a vital resource for preserving a much-needed sense of community in a rapidly changing neighborhood.

Many of of Harlem's valuable community gardens are on the brink of being lost forever. While the preservation and creation of affordable housing is an important issue in NYC, we must also balance these efforts with another critical issue: community-building and preserving an ethos of belonging among all our residents. As well, we must envision how we can preserve the quality of life for our residents over the long-term.

With a long and rich history of transformation, many areas in Harlem are seeing hasty development that does not take into account the larger effects this may have on the surrounding community. The conflicting and intricate effects of this type of swift neighborhood change can often result in tensions between neighbors and dissolution of community. It is now more than ever that places such as the Electric Ladybug Community Garden are critical in reserving space for the evolving neighborhood to develop community bonds among all ages, races, and incomes.

The Electric Ladybug team envisions a garden where ALL neighbors can come together…

...a place to meet neighbors and share stories.

...a place where neighborhood youth can gather, play, and learn.

...a place that provides refuge from the chaos of urban life.

...a place where we—as a collective—can grow veggies, flowers, and plants to enliven our environment and boost our communal health!

As a community we appreciate and recognize the value of affordable housing, but we also ask our leaders to recognize this invaluable space for community building. We ask Mayor de Blasio and HPD to develop the numerous other vacant lots in the area and preserve our community space at 237 West 111th Street—please help us save the Electric Ladybug Community Garden!
