Help Reopen the La Jolla Firehouse YMCA to Daytime Hours

The Issue

The Firehouse YMCA in La Jolla is not just a building, but a community cornerstone. Countless mothers within our community depend on this facility for daytime activities, ranging from workout classes to social opportunities. The temporary closure of this crucial hub directly affects the well-being and daily routines of our fellow community members.

My personal disappointment lies in the dwindled range of daytime workout sessions that are accessible to mothers like me. Getting our kids to school in the morning and preparing dinners in the evening, leaves most of us free only during school hours. The availability of a yoga or spin session at these times, right in the heart of La Jolla, at the Firehouse Y, would be a great asset. Why not have a spin class at 9:30 am so preschool moms could attend? In addition, as a former mother on maternity leave, 9:30 am to 11 am was the best time to exercise. Working moms with busy schedules can fit in a class during their lunch breaks.

At this point, the alternative to the Firehouse Y is an extra 20-minute drive away to the Dan McKinney Y, diminishing the convenience and accessibility that the Firehouse Y offers. Thus, a quick reopening of the Firehouse Y within daytime hours is critical.

I understand how Covid changed things up and financial reasons caused many gyms to close. It was such welcome news to read that the Firehouse Y is re-opening this summer https://lajollabythesea.com/firehouse-ymca-re-opens-in-la-jolla-village/ However, it is currently in a sad state. All the equipment is still gone. There are only two classes the entire week. Only 2! They both are late in the day close to dinner.

We urge the YMCA executives to act upon this issue and implement measures to ensure that the Firehouse YMCA reopens its doors to the public within daytime hours. In taking this step, we can continue to foster the unity, health, and happiness of mothers, and by extension families, within our La Jolla community. Act now to effect this change.
