The Issue

It's time people stood up for the innocent dogs on reserves and northern communities across Canada, especially in Manitoba.  Recent events at Mosakahiken Cree Nation involving as many as 10 youth under 12 torturing and killing 5 puppies or another tragic incident elsewhere in a northern community of a Mother dog after giving birth to 5 puppies had another stuck in her birth canal for 6 long days with maggots crawling on her before anyone called for help, which by then was too late, Mom and 4 pups died.  Sadly these are not isolated incidents, and have highlighted the need for immediate action with regard to animal welfare in these areas.

With the exception of much needed help from some residents and the RCMP, decades of incredible animal rescues from across the provinces trying to assist and train in non-veterinarian care of animals, to the point of emotional, physical and financial exhaustion, little has changed.  Dogs are still allowed to roam free unfixed, resulting in hundreds of unwanted puppies that are starved, dumped in the garbage or suffer worse treatment before their agonizing little lives are mercifully ended.  If they do manage to survive they form wild packs and terrorize the residents, who then form "dog shoot" days.

Spay and neuter of all free roaming dogs is the most humane way of dealing with unwanted puppy populations.  Depending on rescues to take responsibility for unwanted or abused/ neglected dogs and puppies due to the lack of care and funds is not the answer.  It's a vicious cycle that has to stop!

Our government needs to take action immediately to put an end to the abuses and horrific treatment of these dogs. Chiefs, band and community leaders also need to take the initiative to enact and enforce laws to protect animals and provide the necessary funds for training and proper facilities to care for their animals.  Resources are available and action needs to take place now!

Please sign and share, share, share.  Something has to change and only the loudest voices get heard!
