Help Protect Your Backyard Privacy from being recorded- Amend Florida Law 810.145

The Issue

In Hollywood, FL, our home is our sanctuary, a place where my family and I should feel safe and free from intrusion. Unfortunately, this is not the case. We have a neighbor who continually records us in our own privately fenced backyard, a place we assumed would provide us privacy and seclusion. The current Florida law 810.145 protects against video voyeurism, but it lacks specific provisions that cover private, fenced backyards. It is for this reason that I urge the amendment of this law to include more specific protections for individuals and families, like mine, seeking privacy in their own backyard.

In today's digital age, privacy is more vulnerable than ever. As families across Hollywood, FL, enjoy their home environments, they are potentially exposed to unwanted and intrusive recordings by others. Many residents are unaware that their private moments can be captured by neighbors without explicit legal rebuke due to the lack of specific protective measures in our current state laws.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) underscores that privacy is a fundamental human right, yet the legislation does not reflect this when it comes to recording in private backyards. According to a 2020 report from the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), over 65% of homeowners are concerned about privacy invasions on their property. These statistics highlight the need for immediate legislative action.

This petition calls upon the Florida State Legislature to amend law 810.145 to explicitly include privately fenced backyards as protected spaces from unauthorized video recording. By doing so, we would be aligning with the principles of privacy that our Constitution upholds and ensuring that all Floridian families can enjoy their personal spaces without fear of surveillance.

Let's protect the privacy of communities and uphold the sanctity of our homes. Please join me in signing this petition to urge lawmakers to amend Florida law 810.145 and safeguard our rights to privacy in our own backyards.
