The Issue

In our generation, teenagers have been closer to social media than other generations of technology. Since apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, etc. have become very popular, and kids aged 13-18 years old have become attached to them as a daily thing they do. Social media has had a big impact on teens' lives and has brought them closer to each other. It's a way people become creative and express their feelings and thoughts. In some cases, social media can become an addiction and have bad content. Bad content, such as cyberbullying, misinformation about something important, inappropriate content, or even dangerous challenges people want others to do/try. In most cases of our generation, teens are on social media, cyberbullying one another. Kids can get insecure easily just from a couple of comments on their video. About 30.8% of children are experiencing insecurities and anxiety that lead to serious depression. Depression can distance them from others, risk of suicide, and disturbances such as sleep and eating that can cause serious disorders.

You can stop bad content on your and your child's social media popping up on your feed. Your feed on social media is based on what you look at videos, how long, what you search or comment, anything that has to do with interacting with the content will go on your feed. To make it stop, be aware of what you look up or what you say on social media. It can become a loop in your feed on your platform and can cause serious conditions. An example of this is if there is fat shaming, inappropriate content, or even harassment. On some platforms, you can provide feedback on a video and put it on "not interested" to keep it off your feed. A solution that is recommended is to put it in restricted mode. It won't take away your feed, it will only make it safer to use.

People's lives are getting affected by bad content on social media every day. Your child right now could be on the 'bad side' of social media and needs to change it. To help get safer social media content for teens and others and make it aware, sign this petition to help us bring awareness to this issue and help bill H.2236 pass.
