The Issue

Help Preserve the Franklin High School “Indians” Mascot!

There is currently a petition to change the Franklin High School mascot, the “Franklin Indians.” We need your support to preserve this symbol of pride, history, and heritage in Reisterstown, Maryland.

Franklin High School, originally founded as the historic Franklin Academy, is the oldest high school in the area. Our school and community have always held deep respect for the traditions and legacy that shaped us — and our mascot is a meaningful part of that identity.

Why should  “Franklin Indians” mascot remain?

Reisterstown was historically home to several Native American tribes, including the Nanticoke, Susquehannock, and Piscataway peoples. These nations engaged in farming, hunting, and fishing along our region’s waterways. Today, the Piscataway Indian Nation and Piscataway Conoy Tribe are recognized by the state of Maryland, and their history remains rooted in our community.

Many current and former students, alumni, and families connected to these tribes and the broader Reisterstown community have already voiced their support to keep the mascot. For generations, the name “Franklin Indians” has been used with honor and pride — never as a symbol of mockery, but of legacy and remembrance.

Please sign this petition to stand with us in preserving the “Franklin Indians” mascot — a proud tradition of Franklin High School and the community it represents. Thank you!
