Help Preserve the ACP and Lifeline Programs for Low-Income Families

The Issue

I was once homeless, without a phone, and isolated from my family and friends. The struggle to find resources or even look for a job was an uphill battle. Today, I am grateful to use my phone not just as a lifeline to my loved ones but also as a tool for job searches. This personal experience has made me realize the importance of programs like Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and Lifeline.

These programs play a crucial role in providing low-income families with affordable internet and free cellular phone services. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), nearly 7 million households have enrolled in these programs since their inception. However, these benefits are under threat due to potential policy changes.

The latest news from the ACP program indicates that after the wind-down date of February 7, 2024, enrolled households will continue to receive ACP Program benefits until the end of April 2024. After April, the FCC will stop providing funds for cellular and internet service discounts. Therefore, preserving these benefits is crucial. They are not mere handouts but investments in digital equity, helping low-income families break the cycle of poverty and thrive in our digital world.

We must ensure that these essential services remain available for those who need them most. The ACP and Lifeline programs provide more than just connectivity; they offer opportunities for employment, education, healthcare access, and maintaining vital social connections.
