CANADA: RELEASE LEO AND ME! Preserve Brent Carver / Michael J Fox’s Legacies

The Issue

A crucial part of both Brent Carver and Michael J Fox’s legacies could be lost if CBC does not take action.

-

Created by Merv Campone and set in a yacht on the fictional harbours of downtown Vancouver, located in British Columbia, Canada, filmed in 1976, before being released in 1981, Leo and Me starred “Leo”, Brent Carver.  Alongside played his canonical 12-year-old “nephew”, co-star Michael Andrew Fox, playing as the grammatically incorrect “Me” half of the title, working at the set, located at and filmed in Studio 41 at the Vancouver Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Building.  Only few memories of the sit-com remain.

-

As filming began in an estimated early summer, the show would go on to span for 2 seasons, both containing 6 episodes, resulting in 12 episodes altogether.  The only known pay-rate, – Michael Andrew Fox’s, would come home with him after filming.  6,000 dollars overall, leaving him with a pay of an estimated 500 per episode.  Filming concluded in the span of around 2 years, in 1978, in the month of December, as sourced from Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s “This Day in History” Leo & Me post²

It was the estimated first show that Michael Andrew Fox got to participate in, as well as his first official role outside of highschool plays that he partook in for his drama class.  It was also one of Brent Carver’s beginnings, as well as one of his first big roles, making this show an iconic, but lost stamp for both names.  Fox was 15 years old playing a 12 year old orphan alongside Carver, 24, playing a 27-year-old hard-working Italian.  Most of the show’s comical value consisted of the two getting into trouble, but nevertheless always escaping.

Although most of the show is based around the previously mentioned jams that the two main characters (Jamie & Leo) get into, they always find a way out, thanks to Leo’s sidekick, along with his impressively sharp & adept mind.  The two characters are canonically deemed to always find a way out of trouble, regardless of how deep they may be into it.  It is also alleged that Jamie is the main character of the show due to its title being written seemingly from his point of view, as he was the grammatically incorrect “me” half of the title.

Regardless of his “side character” casting call, Fox was overjoyed by receiving the role, as he had beaten over a thousand other boys out of the water with his audition.  According to other casting members from the show, Fox was extremely charismatic on set and would mouth off almost constantly because he was so happy about landing the once-in-a-lifetime role.  This behavior never ceased during the two seasons of filming, even though Fox was 15-years-old in reality, during the time he spent perfectly playing a 12-year-old.

Although playing the main character, as of 2023, Carver never had anything to say about casting in the sit-com, whereas his “side-character” counterpart, Fox, has had many things to say about the casting call.  Although most facts have been retrieved through the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Fox also shared many short stories of his time playing Jamie Romano.  The two seemingly got along on set, but didn’t seem to stay in contact after filming concluded, which is deemed unusual, especially for sit-com stars.

Although the show only aired once or twice (according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) it remains a legendary staple to this day, regardless of the fact that they are refusing to officially release it, though they’ve released it in a time previous.  The show remains relevant in the eyes of many fans (159) as of 2023, nearly 5 decades after the time of creation and airing.  Although the overall legacy lives on, the only way to view it, as of current, is through clips and snippets on seemingly retired casting crew youtube channels.

Alongside Carver and Fox played Mina E. Mina, playing the role of Rocco, who was Leo’s brother-in-law, the husband of Leo’s unnamed sister, played by Donna Christie.  The canonical couple both never chose to speak of the show out of filming and most actors went on to choose to ignore questions and continue playing in newer and more relevant-to-time shows, such as The Beachcombers, a similar show, almost of the same nature, created by the same director, Merv Campone.

Although the show still remains relevant today thanks to the world-wide-web, it stays locked away and unsafely hidden in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Archives, located in the same building that the show was filmed in, located in downtown Vancouver, somehow surviving tens of wildfires, supposedly without harm, hidden from the common public who would mostly like to learn more about it.  As of 2023, two petitions have been started, one of which survived over the span of the time in which it has been around, getting 188 signatures.

The second petition to be created, gained 159 signatures over the span of one month, from June 9th, to July 17th, 2023.  However, the other petition, created in mid-2013, an exact decade before the second petition, only gained 20 signatures before being closed down months after inactivity, which came around some time after an estimated August 2013.  It was created by @cinnamongeek on Tumblr, a retired blogger who retired sometime in 2017.  This was the first and seemingly one of the only times Leo & Me was mentioned on their page.

Two of the estimated 5 clips of Leo & Me have been sourced from Michael Fox’s AppleTV-exclusive motion picture, “Still”, released May 12th, 2023.  The movie features around 45 seconds of the show, chopped up into two portions, taken from two separate episodes.  One being “The Big Time”, seemingly the show’s unfortunate finale, in which the duo finds themselves ready to go homeless as the yacht begins to slowly sink, before Jamie finds himself playing as a child actor for a peanut butter commercial against his own will.

Although Tumblr previously had about 3 people who claimed to wish to find the show, 2 of them have left/deactivated, and the one remaining tumblr user chooses not to speak about it anymore.  There is one tumblr blog based around finding Leo & Me, which is @leoandmecbc, created by myself.  Currently, on tumblr, the first petition advertisement has around 20 impressions and 12 shares.  The official Canadian Broadcasting Corporation account did *post about Leo and Me*⁴ around 2011, 12 years ago.
