John Kiriakou is a former CIA officer who became the first U.S. government official to confirm the use of waterboarding as an interrogation technique, a form of torture, by CIA officials. In 2007, he told ABC News that waterboarding was used on Al-Qaeda suspects, a revelation that sparked debates about the ethics and legality of torture. Instead of being applauded for his truth-telling, John was prosecuted and sentenced to 30 months in prison. While the real perpetrators of the torture program remain free, John paid the price for exposing unlawful and cruel actions on behalf of the U.S. Government.
John’s indictment was not about national security, but rather an act of retaliation against whistleblowers who expose corruption and unethical practices. His case exemplifies the potential consequences faced by those who dare to speak out against powerful institutions. John’s conviction has had a chilling effect on other potential whistleblowers who are now fearful of sharing critical information with the public.
Pardoning John Kiriakou would be a significant step towards restoring justice for whistleblowers who risk everything to bring the truth to light. It would send a powerful message that the government values transparency and ethical conduct over cover-ups and intimidation tactics.
Despite serving his sentence, John remains ostracized, bearing the stigma of a criminal record. A pardon would allow him to regain his rightful place in society, free from the shackles of his past conviction. It is time for redemption, not only for John, but for an America that stands on the values of truth and integrity.
We ask President Donald J. Trump to pardon John Kiriakou, correcting an injustice and demonstrating a commitment to ethical governance. Join us in this cause to right a terrible wrong!
