For the last two weeks we have been stalking a brutal trader who has been driving round near to our small Beijing base with his truck. He has been purchasing village dogs, stealing pets and rounding up strays. One of his goons even tried to intercept our van as we were taking some of the dogs to the vet.
It’s been very stressful as the small base we have unlike our big Hebei one is near a road and we were worried the butcher’s pal would break in with his goons.
We managed to follow him to his ‘ base’ a squalid yard where puppies and small dogs were kept in concrete cells in the dark. He got wind of our activities and threatened our female volunteers but then changed his tune to offer to sell us back the stolen dogs.
We knew if we did this they might not end up in the slaughterhouse but would be replaced in the blink of an eye.
Rescue work is dangerous for our small team and all the gangsters and butchers are linked. After two weeks we got a break. We set up a meeting point and as he arrived with the dogs stuffed in wire cages we grabbed them from him and drove off.
He will be back, and likely with aggression but for now 17 lucky ones are alive, terrified but alive. We are desperate for authority’s to act, for laws to be put into place and for cruelty to end.
This true story of our recent work barely scratches the surface of atrocities like Yulin where dogs and cats are driven for thousands of miles to be murdered.
