Rolf’s story
When we rescued Rolf from the brutal Yulin Dog Meat Market, he was cowering at the back of a crate. The butcher pulled dogs out with metal tongs and threw them into a small truck for slaughter. People think that because there is no longer ‘live’ slaughter in the middle of the festival, the cruelty is less. It’s not. It’s just hidden, and the pain and fear the dogs and cats experience is beyond measure.
Rolf did not bark, scratch, cry, or bite. He was silent even when we grabbed him. He made no sound during the 20-hour drive back to our base. For months after the rescue, he would not move from his plastic bed. He was completely shut down. We tended to his skin and other wounds slowly and with love. Finally, he has made progress. Now he moves to the kennel edge and watches the other dogs and our team intently. Once in a while he will come out and we can give him a gentle cuddle.
Rolf would make a lovely pet. We have many amazing dogs and struggle to feed them each month. In fact we have over 700 at our shelter. They all need sponsors and homes.
