Did you know many dogs are bought in dog meat markets and then forced to be constant blood donors and used in medical experiments? When they are too weak, they are often sold again for meat.
The lovely boy you see in the photo we named Apollo for his bravery in the face of evil. He was one such victim. It is likely Apollo was stolen pet or a stray. When we rescued him, we discovered he came from a dog meat market. He had been held in a small cage at an unscrupulous animal hospital near Beijing for months. He was forced to give blood repeatedly and endure various medications and treatments for wealthy pet owners in the capital.
As you know finding a dog to donate blood is not easy and vets can make money with this. In our own emergencies, we bring in a healthy young dog we know and care for to donate blood and help their brother or sister. Most pet owners don’t care who it is that donates or what happens to them.
A volunteer alerted us to Apollo’s plight. We were shocked by how emaciated he was and how he was never let out of his cage. We demanded the vets hand him over. Even though they said he was no longer useful to them, they still wanted to sell him back to the market for meat. We stopped them.He now lives with our old rescue Flo, and they potter around peacefully. It took him over a year to regain his confidence. He would make a wonderful companion and is full of love despite all that he has been through.
This is just one true story from our daily life in China, and another reason to encourage you to keep campaigning. It is hard for us to continue our work without your help. Please donate to our monthly food and veterinary appeal or buy some merchandise from our charity online shop
We have over 700 dogs and cats in our care and we won’t give up until the cruelty ends.
Thank you for your bravery and compassion.
