In an extraordinary outburst on radio yesterday, Mr Newman put Federal MP Warren Entsch on notice, telling him to “stop grandstanding” on insurance issues. Mr Newman said his government had done all it could to tackle the issue of price gouging in the Far North, having released detailed maps to insurers to allow them to carry out more accurate assessments as well funding local flood mitigation projects. The Far North’s MPs – Gavin King, Michael Trout and David Kempton – backed their Premier, calling on the Abbott Government to use its power to make regulatory changes to the industry.The trio called for the Federal Government to establish a reinsurance fund to help reduce premiums in the Far North, following the success of a similar scheme in parts of New Zealand.
