The Issue

Dr. Patrick Heidkamp is far more than an accomplished scholar—he is a transformative force for environmental justice and sustainability in the Long Island Sound region. A native of Germany who has called the U.S. home since 1993, Patrick brings a brilliant global perspective to his deep, local roots in Connecticut. As a Professor in the Department of the Environment, Geography and Marine Sciences at SCSU, a visiting lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, co-director of the CSUS Center for Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Education, and an affiliate of UConn’s Economic Rights Research Group, his academic credentials are vast. Yet, what truly sets Patrick apart is his heart for the community and his students.

Since 2007, Patrick has been deeply embedded in the marine spaces of the Long Island Sound. Throughout his career, his work has purposefully transitioned from urban and physical geography to a powerful, humanistic mission focused on critical pragmatism, coastal systems, and economic human rights. He doesn't just teach; he opens minds to what is possible when geographic and coastal work meets social action. By holding his students and professional associates to impeccably high standards of transdisciplinary, inclusive, and action-oriented research, he ensures they are equipped to actively heal and protect the Long Island Sound region. Humility defines his leadership: Patrick works tirelessly to lift up others, quietly transforming countless lives and shaping impactful environmental careers, all while very seldom taking credit for the expansive impact he has made.

Given all the help he has given many of us, let's do what we can to show him the impact he has made.
