Name a city park, "Jessica's Place", in Remembrance of Jessica Evans (GothGirl) 1955-2018

The Issue

My partner, Karen Jessica Evans, better known as Goth Girl, was the driving force behind the new $4.5M redesign of this small neighborhood park across from her home in Rincon Hill.  Jessica passed away earlier last year on Valentine's Day.

Our original petition, Save the Hummingbirds of Guy Place Park, generated 800 supporters who believed that this small pocket park in Rincon Hill in San Francisco should retain the existing significant trees, wildlife habitat and local ecosystem in any new park redesign.  Ten year old design plans were created by the city that removed the mature Ash and Avocado trees and replaced them with 12 futuristic, out-of-scale 20-foot tall concrete and steel pillars with no trees and no wildlife habitat.

We fought back against this dated plan, winning a major redesign replacing 9 of the unsightly concrete towers with 9 mature heritage Birch trees that creates a new hummingbird and butterfly habitat, one of the largest in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Our campaign was supported by San Francisco Forest Alliance, South Beach District 6 Democratic Club and former Mayoral candidate and District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim.

We accomplished this feat after meetings with our city supervisor, Jane Kim, conferences with Recreation and Parks Department and a successful Appeal to the city Board of Appeals, in a unanimous 5-0 decision in 2017.

Now we seek to rename the park as "Jessica's Place", in honor of the years of  work it has taken for us to accomplish the new design with the support of neighbors across the political spectrum.

Your support will help attain this goal.
