Help Medford OR transform the Jackson Pool into a Splash-Free Zone!
The Issue
Dear Southern Oregon,
We humbly come before you to express our heartfelt desire for the creation of a new skatepark at the old Jackson Pool site in Medford, Oregon. With the recent closing of the Jackson Aquatic Center located at 815 Summit Avenue, this is a great location for a new public space. Our plea is motivated by a genuine concern for the well-being and growth of our community, and we believe that this skatepark would bring forth numerous benefits for residents of all ages.
1. Providing a Safe Haven: As enthusiastic members of the skateboarding and park riding community, we often find ourselves needing a safe and secure environment to practice our passion. A dedicated skatepark at the Jackson Pool in West Medford would grant us the opportunity to engage in our favorite activities without being exposed to the risks associated with the Bear Creek Greenway. A crime-free environment would not only ensure our safety but also foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie among fellow riders.
2. Enhanced Surveillance: The inclusion of a comprehensive camera surveillance system within the skatepark would further amplify the sense of security. This additional layer of vigilance would discourage antisocial behavior and vandalism while allowing us to focus on honing our skills and enjoying the sport we love.
3. Boosting Local Economy: The proposed skatepark's location would strategically support the minute markets located down the street. Not just the stores, but Jack’s Boardhouse would see new skaters supporting one of our most needed local amenities. The influx of visitors drawn by the skatepark would inevitably translate to increased foot traffic for these businesses, stimulating the local economy and potentially fostering new job opportunities and creating new companies in this area.
4. Expanding Recreational Opportunities: We firmly believe that diversity in recreational options is crucial for a thriving community. A new skatepark at the old Jackson Pool site would diversify the range of activities available to residents, catering to a niche that is currently underserved. The park would become a hub for enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels, enriching the city's cultural tapestry.
5. Fostering Learning and Support: Our vision extends beyond just riding a skateboard; it encompasses fostering a culture of learning and support for all riders. A skatepark at this location would open doors for young individuals and newcomers, enabling them to learn how to ride and be part of a welcoming community. Furthermore, it would extend a hand of support to local businesses like Jack’s Boardhouse, nurturing the growth of Medford's homegrown talents.
In conclusion, we implore you to consider our petition with an open heart and an unbiased perspective. The construction of a skatepark at the old Jackson Pool site would be a testament to your commitment to community well-being, safety, and development. It would not only provide a space for physical activity but also contribute to the growth of our local economy and the nurturing of a vibrant youth culture.
We humbly request your support in making this vision a reality. Together, we can create a space that resonates with the voices of the community and shapes a brighter future for all of Medford, Oregon.
Sincerely,
Will Craft
