Help me get my life back
Help me get my life back
The Issue
My name is Jamel Ward. In 2005, I was sentenced to 144 years in prison in Colorado on three counts of first-degree assault. At that time, because of my prior drug convictions from 1998—convictions that under today’s laws would only be considered misdemeanor possession—the court applied the habitual criminal statute and imposed a sentence that far exceeded what is just or reasonable.
Over these two decades of incarceration, I have reflected deeply on my life, my choices, and the pain caused to my community and my family. I take full responsibility for the path that led me here and for the people I hurt along the way. I have grown, changed, and worked hard to become a better man—someone focused on rehabilitation, faith, and a desire to give back if given the chance.
While I have fought for legal relief on my own, without resources or guidance, I now humbly ask for help—whether through legal expertise, advocacy, or financial support to hire someone who can truly review my case and present it properly. Colorado has since reformed the very laws that were used to enhance my sentence, and under these changes, my sentence today would likely be much shorter. I am simply asking for the opportunity to have my case reviewed fairly and in the light of these reforms.
I know that I cannot change the past, but I am committed to building a better future if given the chance. My only hope is to return home one day and show through my actions that I have learned, grown, and that I can contribute positively to society.
Thank you for taking the time to hear my story. Any guidance, support, or advocacy you can provide would mean more than words can express.
Respectfully,
Jamel Ward
