Help Make Hampton Road (north) in Fremantle Safer for Pedestrians and Cyclists!
The issue
To the Mayor of the City of Fremantle, we the undersigned, do respectfully request that the Council make changes to Hampton Road Fremantle (north of South Street) to enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road safely:
1. without having to walk excessive distances to a crossing point;
2. without being forced to wait excessive periods of time; and
3. without fear of being abused, injured or killed by drivers who ‘read’ the current roadway as a ‘freeway’ – a situation that encourages container trucks, and has resulted in 5 Black Spot intersections , 150 crashes, an 88% rise in casualty crashes and a 29% rise in casualty crashes involving vulnerable users from 2020-24.
Issues include long distances between ‘crossing points’, tiny mid-road refuges that do not safely fit prams, bikes or groups of people, being forced to wait unreasonably long periods to cross, and too many container trucks. A repeated history of unacceptable crash statistics show that Hampton (north) is not safe for people who live, work, walk, cycle or drive along and across it.
Hampton Road (north of South St) is busy and vibrant. It is in easy walking/cycling distance to Fremantle CBD and many destinations such as Hampton Town Centre, Wray Ave, St Pats with 200 residents and staff, Fremantle Pre-Primary and Primary Schools, the Hospital, Stevens Reserve sports and dog park grounds, Booyeembarra Park and mountain bike trails, Fremantle Prison, Monument Hill.
Testament to its vibrancy and walkability is that it was assessed as “High” place value (people and movement) by Main Roads WA in 2022 with its speed limit reduced to 50pkh.
As a local resident I frequently walk and cycle along Hampton Road. Daily I witness cyclists and pedestrians - children, adolescents and adults - in groups or alone, some with prams, bikes, pets, or with limited mobility - all facing the ‘nightmare‘ of safely crossing the road.
Please sign this petition for changes to increase priority and safety for pedestrians and cyclists crossing Hampton (north) including:
- more pedestrian crossing points
- wider pedestrian mid-road refuges
- fully protected crossings
- a roadway design that discourages container trucks
