Help Lower Our Community's Carbon Footprint: No Idling Signs at AUHSD Schools

Help Lower Our Community's Carbon Footprint: No Idling Signs at AUHSD Schools
The Issue
We have already successfully collaborated with the Lafayette School District to implement permanent “No Idling” signs in their parking lots. Now, for the sake of our environment, our health, and our futures, we want to see the Acalanes Union High School District schools implementing the same signs.
Let's work together to lower our community’s carbon footprint and create a healthier, more sustainable environment. Let's follow the LAFSD's footsteps and continue towards a greener community. But we cannot do this without your support. Please sign this petition and join us in this fight against the climate crisis.
Idling is when a driver leaves their car engine running when they aren’t driving. And as students and residents of Lafayette, we see instances of drivers idling everywhere. Whether it's parents waiting to pick up their children from school or people waiting for their order in a restaurant, car engines are needlessly left running for long periods of time. More than being just an inconvenience, idling cars is harmful to our environment, damaging to the health, and a drain on our wallets.
By idling, we are unnecessarily contributing to climate change, one of the earth's most significant challenges. The emissions from idling cars add to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, further warming our planet and causing countless devastating effects that we are already seeing today.
In addition, car exhaust fumes are detrimental to our health. They contain several toxic pollutants that can lead to severe respiratory illnesses, especially among children and the elderly. This is important because we see idling happening all the time in school parking lots where kids are walking around, breathing in these toxic fumes. This needs to stop, and we can do this by educating drivers with these signs.
In 2022, we went to the Lafayette City Council with more than 200 signatures supporting our project, asking them to adopt a no idling resolution across the city. The members decided to show their support and adopt a no idling resolution for the city. That means that City Council is committed to educating Lafayette residents to not idle, and it will work with us to help spread the word.
We want to continue this effort to spread awareness about the harms of idling so that we can lower our collective carbon footprint and protect our environment!
