Help Lizzie the Weavers Way Co-op cat keep her job

The Issue

Some of you who are regular shoppers at Weavers Way Mount Airy may be familiar with Lizzie the cat. You may have met her in passing, or perhaps even look forward to seeing her in her window bed, as she monitors the going’s on of the neighborhood. For many of us shoppers, she has been the highlight of our trip to the grocery store, something that our local acmes and shop rites do not offer. The co-op has always been a different kind of shopping experience and something about Lizzie’s presence always made people feel more at home. Lizzie came to the Co-op as a young kitty after being found wandering around the Germantown Jewish Centre. When the staff at the Co-op heard of Lizzie’s situation, they offered her a position in their 555 offices next to the store. She settled in right away and took quickly to her new life as the office cat. For the past ten years, Lizzie has been head of rodent prevention, overseeing notary services, keeping staff members in line, inspecting all cardboard boxes, and keeps the streets safes for our community. Not to mention, the numerous smiles she’s brought to people’s faces over the years. Many have come to love and adore the grumpy, but sweet kitty that has come to know this place as home. When we heard about the uprooting of Lizzie’s life, we were devastated and shocked. Many staff and shoppers feel the same way. The mood around the news has clearly effected people significantly. We do not believe this is the best decision for Lizzie or the Co-op and we are standing together to say that Lizzie does not deserve to have her home taken from her.  She has a been a vital part of the community for ten years and Weavers Way would not be the same without her. We do not agree with the decision to covertly remove her from her position in the office. Please consider helping us keep Lizzie in her rightful home. Our goal is to get the Co-ops attention so they see how important Lizzie is to us and our community and change their minds about rehoming her.
