Help Launch a Global Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Program for War-Torn Palestinians

Help Launch a Global Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Program for War-Torn Palestinians
The Issue
The Issue
Growing up in the heart of Palestine, I have witnessed and experienced the harsh realities that the people of Palestine face every day due to the conflict. One of the most heart wrenching aspects of this conflict is seeing friends and family members, many of whom are children, losing their limbs in the chaos. The loss of a limb is not just a physical injury, it’s a scar that marks their spirit, dreams, and future.
The Crisis:
Thousands of Palestinians, especially in Gaza, have suffered unimaginable losses due to bombings, airstrikes, and landmines. According to reports from international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), there has been a significant increase in limb amputations following recent escalations in conflict, with cases reporting that over 5,000 amputations occurred in the past couple of months alone due to the ongoing violence, leaving many without access to vital prosthetic support.
There are more child amputees in Gaza than anywhere else in the world. UNICEF estimates that between 3,000 and 4,000 children in Gaza have had one or more limbs amputated, making Gaza the region with the highest rate of child amputees per capita.
Beyond the mass death, international agencies suggest that at least 110,000 people in Gaza have been injured, including at least 25,000 children. Doctors Without Borders reports that before the Israeli assault, there were 36 hospitals serving 2.3 million residents in Gaza – one for every 60,500 people. In comparison, the US has one hospital for every 23,500 people, but the ongoing siege on Gaza has severely crippled the region’s healthcare infrastructure. Today, most of that infrastructure no longer exists. Zero hospitals remain operational in Gaza.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has continuously highlighted the overwhelming shortage of medical supplies and rehabilitation services, and it is clear that without external intervention, these injured individuals will be left to face a future of physical and mental scars.
Gaza’s reconstruction will require more than $50bn over the next 10 years, according to a UN, EU, and World Bank assessment. While the need for immediate medical care and prosthetic support is urgent, the long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction of Gaza’s infrastructure are critical to restoring the lives of its people.
The Solution:
The launch of an International Prosthetics & Rehabilitation Initiative is mandatory. This initiative would provide the much needed prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation services to those affected by the conflict. With support from international humanitarian organizations, governments, and medical professionals, we can ensure the collection and distribution of resources, which will help restore physical mobility, independence, and dignity to these individuals.
This initiative is not just about prosthetics; it’s about giving hope, a chance to rebuild lives, and an opportunity for people to live free from the limitations of war-induced disabilities.
Impact and Urgency:
Without immediate action, the situation will continue to worsen. Every day without proper rehabilitation services further cripples the mental and physical health of these survivors. Their ability to return to work, education, or simply live with dignity is severely compromised.
Organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) have been providing medical aid, but the lack of long-term solutions for prosthetics and rehabilitation means many will be left to face their futures in debilitating pain and suffering. We must change that.
The Call to Action:
This petition is a call to governments, humanitarian organizations, and individuals worldwide to stand together in solidarity with those suffering in Palestine. By supporting this initiative, we can restore their dignity, mobility, and give them the chance to rebuild their lives.
With your support, we can make a difference and help give life and hope back to those who have suffered enough.
