Help Keep Herbert Von King Park Clean and Beautiful: More Trash Cans & Better Maintenance!

Help Keep Herbert Von King Park Clean and Beautiful: More Trash Cans & Better Maintenance!
The Issue
Herbert Von King Park is a beloved and central part of our BedStuy community. Spanning 7.8 acres, this park is a vital gathering space, offering clean green areas, playgrounds, a picnic area, a dog park, an outdoor amphitheater, a basketball court, baseball fields, and numerous benches. Many of the 157,000 residents in our neighborhood rely on this park for recreation, relaxation, and connecting with neighbors.
The Problem
Currently, there are only 20 trash cans spread across the park, and many are too small to handle the volume of waste generated—especially on weekends during the warmer months. Some areas, like the Tompkins side, have almost no trash cans in sight. This leads to litter and overflowing bins, affecting the park's cleanliness and safety.
Proposed Solutions
To address this issue, we ask the city to take the following actions:
- Install Additional Trash Cans: Increase the number of trash cans in the park, aiming to meet or exceed the average standard of 1 trash can per 10,000-15,000 square feet. Currently, our park has only 1 can per 17,000 square feet, which is insufficient.
- Increase Frequency of Trash Collection: Adjust the maintenance schedule to empty trash cans more often, particularly during weekends and busy seasons, to prevent overflow.
Why This Matters
By adding more trash cans and improving the frequency of waste collection, we can make a huge difference in keeping Herbert Von King Park clean, safe, and inviting for everyone. A cleaner park benefits our entire community, making it a place where everyone can enjoy nature, spending time with family and friends, and be active.
Join us in calling for a cleaner and greener Herbert Von King Park! Please sign this petition to show your support for increased trash cans and enhanced waste management in our neighborhood park.
