The Issue

Three years ago, my daughter, Shelly Pettaway, was tragically murdered in Inkster, Michigan. Despite the passage of time, her killer continues to walk freely without facing any justice, a reality that deeply grieves and angers me to this day. It was the most harrowing experience of my life, filled with a profound sense of helplessness and injustice that no parent should ever have to endure.

Like me, John Kafel is a parent who has experienced the unimaginable. He hails from Cleveland, Ohio, where he tragically lost his son in a horrific act of violence—a heart-wrenching event that no parent can truly prepare for. In a desperate moment, driven by overwhelming grief and emotional distress, John acted in a way that he would not have under normal circumstances. He is now incarcerated for killing his son's murderer.

John Kafel is not a danger to society; he is a grieving father who experienced a breakdown under the most distressing circumstances imaginable. This act was not premeditated; it was a reaction to the profound and devastating loss he suffered. It’s important to acknowledge the intense psychological stress and emotional turmoil he was under when he decided to take the law into his own hands.

Mass incarceration is a pervasive issue in the United States, particularly impacting individuals who might have acted under severe distress. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, over 600,000 people are currently in local jails nationwide, many of whom are there due to circumstances involving mental health struggles. Situations like John's highlight the urgent need for a judicial system that understands and accommodates the mental and emotional states that can lead to criminal acts out of character.

This petition aims to bring John’s story to light and call for his release under the recognition that he is not a habitual criminal, but a father propelled into an extreme mental state by the loss of his child. We urge the authorities to take into account the context and emotional distress that led to his actions.

John Kafel deserves a second chance, not life behind bars. His actions were a tragic consequence of a broken system failing to deliver justice for his son’s murder. Let us stand together for compassion, understanding, and reformative justice.

Please join us in supporting this cause and advocating for a fair reconsideration of John's case. Sign this petition to help John gain his freedom and acknowledge the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his actions.
