Help Gentrified Charleston Residents

Help Gentrified Charleston Residents
The Issue
The Issue
Food disparity has been a growing issue in recent years, and it primarily stems from gentrification. The wealth gap between the downtown region of Charleston and the upper parts of the peninsula continues to widen because of this.
The battery provides attractive scenery with its historic houses to accompany newly built ones. These are bought by wealthier individuals which keeps the monetary value of Charleston as high as it is. In the North Charleston region, however, residents struggle financially and have limited access to resources. Alongside this, there is a large racial difference between these two parts of Charleston. Based on the statistic given by Blakeney, “the city of Charleston has experienced 52 percent displacement of its residents due, in large part, to gentrification (Blakeney). Considering the relationship between gentrification and the amount of people affected, food insecurity in North Charleston is an issue that needs to be addressed.
The current state of North Charleston regarding this problem cannot go unresolved. Residents living in this affected area face long walks or commutes to a basic supermarket, financial struggles, and unmet nutritional needs. Food deserts are commonly seen in this region, so even with a vehicle, a round trip to the store is not convenient. According to Medical News Today, food deserts are areas with high poverty rates and a lack of grocery stores with fresh produce. If a family is not financially stable, long work hours prevent others from being cared for. This includes not being able to afford healthier, more nutritious options. Being able to easily access a grocery store and buy nutrient-dense foods should be a bare-minimum experience, so policies need to be put into place to focus on how those facing food disparity can be aided.
By signing this petition, you can advocate for those in the midst of being food insecure and spread awareness about this continuing issue to others. If efforts are being taken to renovate downtown Charleston, efforts can be made to improve the underserved areas.
