Remove False Police Report and Lifetime Ban against our daughter from former high school
The Issue
Our daughter, Chaquoya Brown, a 2017 graduate, simply went to her former high school (Charlton County High) located in Folkston, Ga., front office to sign in as a visitor, to say goodbye to her former classmates and staff (during lunch) before leaving for college, just as others students were allowed to do. However, she was denied this same privilege by the Assistant Principal, Josh Popham. He told her to come back after school hours. Upon her return after school hours, as instructed, he was standing out at the front of the school waiting to attempt to pick a fight. He called her over to him and began to talk to her very rudely in front of our then, 6-year-old daughter. After she asked for respect from him, he became angry and called the police, resulting in a lifetime ban against our daughter.On the report at the Folkston City Police Department, on file,it states that she had unwelcome behavior, refused to leave, and also states that she was arrested, which are ALL false. How does he, Assistant Principal,Josh Popham, call her over to him ( which is welcoming), talk to her with disrespect( attempting to provoke), and then claim "unwelcome behavior? " It was he, Josh Popham, who had unwelcome behavior.He lied to the police, stating that he had told her to leave the premises several times. However, he NEVER told her to leave the premises, and she NEVER was arrested. Unknown to them at the time, our daughter had recorded this encounter. Due to our work schedule, we couldn't handle this matter until the following day. Therefore, the next day, (before taking our daughter off to college) we thought it was best to go to the police department to allow our daughter to tell her side. The Chief of Police, Wesley Green, stated that "he" called the school to see if they wanted to place a criminal trespassing warning on her, banning her from the schools for a lifetime. He (Chief Green) stated that the Assistant Principal said "yes". It is then that officer Chris Carter writes a report saying that she had unwelcome behavior and refused to leave. Chris Carter also states on the report that he was the reporting officer. He( Chris Carter) was not at the incident the day prior. Officer Jamie Murray was the reporting officer, which also lied to Chief Green, stating that he had to tell her to leave seven times, per Chief Green. He ( officer Jamie Murray )was also unaware that he was recorded, which proved him to be a liar as well. Chief Green goes on to say, even if she doesn't sign, it still goes into affect for a "LIFETIME". Therefore, as of today she can NEVER go back to the highschool in which she graduated. Our daughter has a sister that plays basketball for this school and also is a high achiever academically. Due to this unjust ban, our daughter can never attend award ceremonies, or even see her sister play. This ban is unjust, extreme, and unfair. Other students and past athletes are allowed to visit this same high school my daughter was denied the same privilege to visit. We have pictures to prove that other students WERE and ARE allowed to visit. One picture in particular,showing that a white male was allowed to even sit in the classroom while class was in session, shortly after this incident involving our daughter. We also have a 25 minute recording of the then, Principal, Josh Howard,stating that another white male student came out, without signing in at the office, roaming the halls, which is very dangerous ( due to school shootings). However, no police were called. In this recording, the Principal, Josh Howard, also confesses that Mr. Popham reported to him on the day of this incident that our daughter ONLY said "gosh", (out of frustration from his disrespect/ rudeness), when leaving and goes on to say that he would "straighten things out" to get this ban lifted. However, this never happened. Mr. Popham changed his story, later adding to his lies, saying that she used profane language and was loud, in an attempt to justify his overreacting because he knew that this punishment was extreme, unfair, and unjust....just a flat out LIE. He have changed his story too many times to even be thought of as the truth, going as far as putting an FALSE ad in the local newspaper. I requested for the surveillance videos to be released, to be used as proof that he, Assistant Principal, Josh Popham, called our daughter over to him to attempt to pick a fight. However, the school's Attorney, Patrick Brooks, stated that they don't exist. We later learned that this Attorney for the schools (Patrick Brooks) and his father are both relatives of the Assistant Principal, which is a conflict of interest, and also better explains why his actions were "normalized, justified, protected, and covered up."
Why is this important?
This report at the City of Folkston Police Department is false. Our daughter did not commit any crime, has never been charged or arrested. She followed the rules in place, going to the front office as a visitor, and was punished due to pure hatred and abuse of power by this Assistant Principal, Josh Popham. Please help fight for equality for ALL in our school systems, police departments, and judicial system all over the world!
