Help Families for Freedom Bring Bobby Home
The Issue
Families for Freedom is an NYC-based human rights organization operated by and for families facing and fighting deportation. We are immigrant prisoners (detainees), former immigrants, their loved ones, or individuals at risk of deportation. We come from dozens of countries, across continents.
For the past 8 months, we have been diligently working with an individual named Robert Benoit who is a frequent traveler to Jamaica. On his most recent trip to Jamaica in December 2020, he was detained and intimidated by Jamaican police who wrongfully charged him with heinous crimes. During this ordeal, his passport and other valuables were stolen. He was also detained in a prison in Jamaica where he was abused and suffered injuries.
On Tuesday, March 28th, Benoit was wrongfully charged with the crime due to a lack of adequate legal guidance from his attorney who has been exploiting him. We have obtained video from a young female associated with the case who can testify that he's innocent. The attorney didn't use these exhibits in court. As a result, Benoit is being remanded until May when he will be sentenced. Benoit is aging and has been subjected to injuries from the Jamaican police and we believe that he will be killed in prison. We've reached out to the State Department through the Jamaican Embassy, and they haven't provided much assistance.
With this campaign, we are aiming to raise awareness on this issue and receive intervention from the United States government. Time is of the essence because Bobby continually endures abuse while in prison and his medications have been stolen from him. It is imperative that his charges are dropped and he return to the United States so he can receive adequate medical care.
