Help End the Brutal Dog and Cat Meat Trade in Ghana

Urging the African Union, Union of Chiefs, African Union Commission, House of Chiefs, and leaders across Africa to ban these cruel animal trades and implement enforceable animal protection laws. We join millions of people around the world calling on governments to protect animals from cruelty, abuse, and unnecessary suffering.

Dogs gathered at the market ready to be sold

“Dogs gathered in a market linked to the dog meat trade in Ghana. Thousands of dogs across Africa continue to suffer through neglect, confinement, transport, and slaughter for human consumption and rituals”

Ghana is one the the 22 countries in Africa that consume and are involved in Cat and Dog meat Trade

The Institute of Community Sustainability (ICS) is working to end the dog and cat meat trade in Ghana and push for the criminalisation of dog and cat meat consumption.

Across parts of Ghana, dogs and cats are being confined in tiny cages, chained, beaten, neglected, and sold in markets for consumption and rituals. Many endure extreme fear, pain, and suffering before being brutally slaughtered. Some people believe consuming dog meat can heal heartbreak or bring benefits during ceremonies such as weddings, while others consume it simply because they believe it tastes better. Regardless of tradition or belief, cruelty toward animals should never be accepted.

Dogs and cats are loyal, sentient beings capable of love, trust, and companionship — not food.

These animal cruelties continue across multiple African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Niger, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Liberia, Guinea, Chad, Sudan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, South Africa, and others. The dog and cat meat trade causes horrific suffering to countless animals across the continent.

Petition to Ban BARBARIC Animal CrueltyTrades Implement Enforce Animal Protection Law in Africa

Previous petitions may have gone unheard, but we will continue fighting until these animals are protected

The ICS aims to continue expanding these efforts to other affected countries in Africa to help stop this cruelty and protect vulnerable animals from abuse and slaughter.

This cruel trade is not only an animal welfare issue, but also a serious public health concern. Animals kept in horrific and unsanitary conditions may carry deadly diseases such as Rabies, bacterias such as Cholera, parasites, and infections that can put both animal and human health at risk.

The Institute of Community Sustainability plans to present these petitions and supporting evidence to the Parliament and President of Ghana to push for stronger animal protection laws and help bring an end to this inhumane practice.

“Media coverage of the Institute of Community Sustainability (ICS) raising awareness and advocating for stronger animal protection laws against the dog and cat meat trade in Ghana”

Heartbreaking reactions against efforts to end the dog and cat meat trade in Ghana

A Ghanaian MP has opposed efforts to ban the dog meat trade.

ICS needs more support than ever as they continue fighting against cruelty despite strong opposition and backlash.

We urge the Government of Ghana, including the Parliament and President John Mahama, to take urgent action to:

  1. - Ban the dog and cat meat trade
  2. - Criminalise dog and cat meat consumption
  3. - Strengthen animal welfare laws
  4. - Shut down inhumane live animal markets
  5. - Organise rescue centres and safe shelters for animals rescued from the meat trade
  6. - Educate communities and children about animal welfare, compassion, and responsible treatment of animals
  7. - Support alternative small businesses and opportunities for people involved in the meat trade so they can transition away from this industry permanently
  8. - Protect animals from cruelty, abuse, and suffering

There is no place for this level of cruelty in the modern world.
