The Issue

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Delta Sigma Phi,

Starting in the 2024-2025 academic year, Delta Sigma Phi was awarded a new Special Interest Housing space in Reed House: our first seemingly "official" chapter house in years, with room to accommodate nearly five times more members than before. Reed House has been transformational for our organization, providing a common space for brothers to bond and foster deeper friendships. Moreover, our organization has just experienced one of its most successful recruitment years in recent memory, thanks in part to having an official chapter house again.

Naturally, there were some growing pains: occasional noise complaints and a period of adjustment as the surrounding community became accustomed to our presence at Reed House. However, our chapter leadership took these concerns seriously. We worked closely with the administration, made good faith changes, and remained committed to being respectful and responsible
neighbors to the best of our ability.

In March, after months of collaboration, the Residence Life and Housing office confirmed in writing that we would remain in Reed House for the 2025-2026 academic year, contingent on continuing to increase our upperclassmen membership through recruitment, a goal we have been working hard to meet.

However, without any prior warning or dialogue, on June 25, 2025, the College informed us they had decided to remove us from Reed House entirely. We have been advised that members of our fraternity will largely be placed in standard dorms, with only five seniors being offered space in a single townhouse. The College has given us until June 27, 2025, to accept this offer.

Perhaps most concerning is the complete lack of transparency and communication in how this decision was made. The way we were notified felt not only premeditated and finalized but also entirely devoid of student input or dialogue. There was no collaborative process, no advance notice, just an abrupt announcement that undermines the trust we placed in the
College and threatens to undo everything we’ve worked so hard to build over the past year. This is not just about a building. It’s about a home; a place that has helped our members grow, connect, and thrive as part of the Dickinson community.

We are respectfully asking for your support before the June 27 deadline and in the next weeks to help us urge Dickinson College to honor its prior agreement and allow Delta Sigma Phi to remain in Reed House for the 2025-2026 academic year. Your signature in the attached petition will help
ensure that the fraternity continues to provide a safe, values-driven, and empowering space for generations to come.

And if Reed House is truly no longer an option, we ask that the administration engage in honest, collaborative dialogue with us to explore a more accommodating and appropriate housing solution than what has currently been forced upon us. We remain committed to working together
to find a solution that respects both the College’s standards and the needs of our brotherhood.

Thank you for standing with us.
