Help create a rail trail linking Airmont to Spring Valley!

Help create a rail trail linking Airmont to Spring Valley!
The Issue
What's being proposed?
Lifelong Town of Ramapo resident Matthew Audi and his working group are proposing the creation of a multi-use greenway that would connect Airmont, Monsey, and Spring Valley. This 3.5-mile section of the Old Piermont Rail Line, from Spook Rock Road in Airmont to Commerce Street in Spring Valley, has not been used since the 1970s.
Is it feasible?
Metro North is open to selling the right of way, so the Town of Ramapo has a real opportunity to preserve this area as a path for all residents to enjoy. This idea has been considered before, but with community support, we are encouraging the Town to apply for grants and make it a reality.
What are the benefits of a new rail trail and where would it go?
A rail trail would provide a walking path for community residents, improve access to public transport, such as the Spring Valley Transit Center, and provide a safer alternative to Route 59 for pedestrians. You can view the map Matthew created, which includes photographs of the right of way in its current condition. Visit our website for more info - www.ramaporailtrail.com
What's been done so far?
We have begun a dialogue with local community groups and officials. These are early steps and rail trail projects can be difficult, but we believe the creation of the path would be a great asset to the community and is worth the effort.
How can I help?
If the Ramapo Rail Trail sounds like something you would like to see come to fruition, please take a minute to sign this petition. Showing Town Supervisor Michael Specht and other officials that individuals and organizations are behind this project will increase its legitimacy and the likelihood of it happening. PLEASE DON'T DONATE! Funds go to Change.org, not us.
I have an idea! How do I share it?
We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas, so please share them via email with Matthew (maudi8745@gmail.com) and/or Joanne (me@joanneabouttown.com)!
