The Issue

Do you care about period poverty? We do!  We are Fifth graders at the Brooklyn New School in New York City and we want to end period poverty by educating people about the issue and making period products free and accessible.

So many menstruators around the world suffer from not having the resources that they need for their period.  In fact, according to the Alliance for Period Supplies, almost 1 in 4 students in the United States have a hard time paying for the period products they need. This proves that so many people do not have what they need to keep their body healthy.  We want to help the world, but we need the world to help us.  A lot of students in the world who don’t have the products they need for their period, stay home from school when they're on their period.  That minimizes their education and then if they don't get a good education they have a lower chance of getting a good job. We need education for kids and adults, we need them to realize that this is a big problem all around the world, but we need to start small.  In New York City so many people have to decide between getting “the most important thing" like food or clothing or getting period products.  This needs to change.

We call upon Mayor Mamdani to address period poverty.  We want to make period products free and accessible for all menstruators in New York City.  Thank you for supporting our cause!

Sincerely,

Millie, Maya & Timea
