Help change the special education leadership

Help change the special education leadership
The Issue
My child, along with many others in our district, is being denied the special education services they are entitled to. This is an alarming situation that impacts not only the academic progress of these students but their overall development and well-being. The leadership of our special education department, specifically the current director and assistant director, play a crucial role in this systemic failure. We believe that they have engaged in misconduct that necessitates a change in leadership to ensure all students receive the support they deserve.
Our district holds a responsibility to provide equitable education to every child, regardless of their learning needs. Unfortunately, the current leadership in our special education department has not been fulfilling this duty. The lack of access to appropriate resources, support, and advocacy has left many students marginalized and unsupported. Reports from parents and guardians have highlighted a consistent pattern of neglect, with essential services being withheld or seriously delayed.
The misconduct has not only impaired educational access but has also eroded trust within our community. Educational directives have been mismanaged and critical interventions are delayed or denied without justification. As a result, students are falling behind, not due to their abilities or potential, but due to administrative indifference and incompetence.
Last year at the high school they created classes specifically for students who are 4-6 years behind grade level and many don’t even have IEP’s or 504’s. This alone is of great concern that it has been allowed to just push through students without putting in proper supports to help them succeed. Furthermore, if students are properly supported, behaviors go down and when behavior goes down, we all win. Because when we get it right for our children, we get it right for everyone.
We demand accountability and transparency in our school district's management. It is imperative that the contracts of the current director and assistant director of special education are not renewed. This will enable our district to seek new leadership committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
To achieve this goal, we urge the school board to actively investigate these claims of misconduct and engage with the community to gather direct feedback from affected families. Additionally, it is essential to establish a task force comprising educators, specialists, parents, and advocates to oversee the transition to new leadership and ensure that all special education programs are comprehensively audited and revised.
The future of our special education services does not rest solely on school administrators, but on empowering and listening to those who are directly impacted by these decisions. By not renewing these contracts, we can take the first step towards building a more equitable educational environment for all students within our school district and start to rebuild some of the trust between our schools and parents. Stand with us in demanding this necessary change. Sign this petition and help secure a better future for our children.
