The Issue

Hi, My name is Rebekah Bahr. I would like to change the Harker Heights chicken ordinance. Our current ordinance is 6 hens allowed per household and 75ft of distance required between a coop and surrounding houses. I propose we increase the number of hens allowed to 10 and decrease the distance required to 25ft. Our current ordinance significantly rules out too many families with smaller yards and lower incomes. Chickens have so many environmental benefits and can help cut back on landfill waste. Homegrown eggs are better for your health and taste so much better! Also out of our surrounding cities we have the lowest number of hens allowed and the highest amount of required distance between a coop and surrounding houses.

Killeen - 8 hens, 25ft

Cove - 10 hens, 20ft

Belton - Unlimited, no restrictions, 25ft

Harker Heights - 6 hens, 75ft

Check out this article about how many hens you need to have enough eggs for your family: https://grubblyfarms.com/blogs/the-flyer/how-many-chickens-for-reliable-egg-production

Together we can make backyard chickens an inclusive, environmentally smart, and see economically friendly choice for our city. Thank you for your help!

No donations needed. All donations go to change.org there is no way for me to access it. Thank you for your support!
