Help Brown University and RISD Students After Shooting

Help Brown University and RISD Students After Shooting
The Issue
As a mental health therapist specializing in trauma and complex trauma since 2013, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that disruptions in mental health care can have on individuals who have experienced traumatic events. Access to continuous and immediate support is vital for recovery and well-being. Like many, I have deep roots in Rhode Island, having grown up in Providence around the Brown University campus, with numerous personal and professional connections to the University. The recent tragic shooting at Brown University on December 13, 2025, has left an indelible mark on the community, particularly affecting students who are grappling with the aftermath.
In light of this devastating event, it is crucial to provide uninterrupted mental health services to those in need. However, current regulations regarding telehealth services can pose significant barriers. Many mental health providers across the country stand ready to offer their support, yet without a temporary telehealth certification in Rhode Island, their ability to assist is severely limited.
I call upon the Rhode Island legislature and Governor Dan McKee to swiftly enact a temporary telehealth certification. This certification would enable mental health providers nationwide to deliver critical and continuous care to Brown University students and other affected individuals during this challenging time. By doing so, we can ensure that no student is left without the necessary psychological support they need to heal and rebuild in the wake of this tragedy.
The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. Mental health care is not only vital for recovery but also for preventing the long-term impacts of such trauma. Students impacted by the shooting deserve the best possible care, and it is our responsibility to facilitate access to qualified mental health professionals who can guide them through this journey.
By signing this petition, you support the urgent call for legislative action to enact temporary telehealth certification. Join us in urging our leaders to prioritize mental health and ensure that barriers are removed, so that vital support can reach those who need it most.
