The Need for a Theatrical Release

As I make this petition on April 15th, 2026, an unfortunate thing has occurred: the entire ATLA movie has been leaked to the world through social media. A movie that has been worked on for YEARS now. A movie that has had so much hard work and love poured into its creation. A movie that — from the get go — deserved to keep its original, impending theatrical release, before suddenly being locked behind the  walls of Paramount Plus.

I have been a fan of this show for as long as I can remember. Ever since a young age, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was always the show I intentionally sought out to watch on television. Simply put, this franchise means the world to me. To this day, I am still heavily involved in the fandom, and I am one of its biggest enthusiasts. When I first heard about talk of this movie years ago, I was absolutely thrilled. And to hear that Avatar Studios planned on making even more movies? I was smiling from ear to ear, and the concept of it all still has me feeling giddy.

Like myself, many others are very devoted to this franchise. This can be seen by the amount of love people give towards all projects under it to this day. From the original series, to “The Legend of Korra,” to even “Avatar: Seven Havens” — a new series that’s in the works, following the next avatar after Korra. A recent novel titled “City of Echoes” surrounding a one-time episode character from ATLA (Jin) has also gained a lot of popularity, which shows just how much fans care about this show; they’re willing to spend money on books relating to characters that some might view as insignificant.

Graphic novels/comics continue to release as well, such as a recent one regarding Kya — Aang and Katara’s daughter. This is, once again, something that I’ve already seen many enjoy quite heavily. The list just goes on and on and on. Out of every fanbase that I’ve ever been in (which is a lot), the Avatar fanbase is one of the most passionate and creative. With this in mind, it’s a shame that a fanbase this enthusiastic isn’t getting the theatrical release they deserve. Hell, it’s a shame that the artists, voice actors, directors — EVERYONE involved in the making of this movie — isn’t going to get to view it on the big screen.

And it’s so heartbreaking that the entire film has been leaked 6 months before its intended release. I am not here to play moral police on those who have watched it; keep in mind, however, how damaging it is to Avatar Studios. We may not get anymore movies from them due to this behavior from a lot of people. Which is such a shame, because from what I’ve heard, the animation is absolutely gorgeous (just like everything else about this movie), and deserves its flowers.

If you’ve watched the film, fine. But to those who are spoiling everything all over the internet for individuals that are choosing to wait? That’s horrible. How can you call yourself a fan of the show, and not even follow the same virtues and morals that were taught to us through it? It’s awfully ironic.

The point of this petition is to gain traction. To hope that perhaps, enough signatures will be received, and this movie can still get the theatrical release it deserves. I’m well aware that the decision to have it on Paramount Plus’ streaming platform is seemingly final. But it doesn’t hurt to try. Especially when you consider the fact that this streaming platform isn’t even available in some countries. Most of Asia doesn’t have access to it at all — which again, is ironic, seeing as how a lot of of the characters in the original series are Asian; the creators have quite literally taken & incorporated a lot of cultural inspiration from real life countries for the world building in that show.

This entire issue would be a lot less upsetting if it was at least being put on something like Netflix, which statistically has MILLIONS of loyal global subscribers (something that Paramount Plus lacks). The original Netflix film “K-Pop Demon Hunters” has even gone as far as winning an Oscar as of this March, as well as other awards; that’s something that I would love to see happen for “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.” So while a theatrical release is still my goal here, Netflix was the second best thing, and we don’t even have that going for us.

Additionally, while I do find the spreading of all these spoilers and leaks to be a horrible thing, it’s definitely (once again) highlighted a very obvious fact: people are devoted to this franchise. I already talked about this earlier, but time and time again, this fanbase is extremely appreciative of the characters we’ve all grown to know and love. I’ve seen many people saying that even though they’ve already pirated the movie, they’d still be down to watch it in theaters if it was released there.

In conclusion, this is something that would mean everything to not only myself, but many others. Having this movie in theaters would do it true wonders. And I’m not just saying that out of bias due to being a fan; this is something that’s just blatantly true.

Please spread this petition to others!! Let’s try our best to get as many signatures as possible 🙏🏽🌬️🌊🪨🔥
