Why this petition matters

A dog park would be a wonderful addition to Amos Herr Park and an asset for the East Hempfield community. The timing is perfect to start the conversation with township officials and make a plan!

What is a dog park?
A dog park is a safe fenced-in public space where people and their dogs can socialize, exercise and play. They can be managed by park users in conjunction with township officials and cost relatively little to operate.

Why do dogs need to be with other dogs?
They are naturally social animals that thrive playing in groups. So naturally, dogs who are well socialized tend to be better behaved overall, according to the American Kennel Club. Exercise is critical to a dog’s health, and when dogs have room to run off leash, they can get exercise without endangering themselves or others.

Dog parks don’t just benefit dogs.
They can be a great spot for neighbors to meet other neighbors with common interests. The more neighbors that make connections, the stronger our community becomes. Plus, neighbors love a well exercised and socialized dog. It means they are less likely to create a nuisance, bark excessively or destroy property.

How else East Hempfield benefit from a dog park?
Dog parks are a destination. They draw people to come and visit and often engage in other activities nearby. That means more customers for local businesses. Plus, a well populated place deters crime. The presence of owners and their dogs within a park can help to discourage vandalism in adjacent areas.

Why Amos Herr Park?
Spatially, A. Herr Park could easily accommodate a dog park. There are a couple potential areas that would work well and the park masterplan has yet to be fully implemented. Since the “pandemic puppy” boom, there are more dogs in East Hempfield than ever. They need a place to play and their families would bring more park usage as a community gathering space. Let’s come together and talk to our town legislators while the time is right!
