Help Allow Students To Use Their Phone

The Issue

My name is Sophia and i’m a student in Des Moines, IA, I feel the urgent need to address the importance of allowing students to use their phones during school hours. In today's world, the safety and well-being of students have become a top priority. Incidents such as school shootings, unexpected lockdowns, and sudden visits by deportation police have made it imperative for students to have a reliable means of communication at their fingertips.

In the event of an emergency, every second counts. Being able to discreetly contact family members or emergency services can make the difference between life and death. Phones can serve as a critical line of communication, providing students with timely updates and information, whether it is about a safety threat or simply related to school schedules.

Furthermore, many educational apps and resources can enhance the learning experience if smartphones are integrated into the classroom. It's vital to adapt to the technological advancements of the 21st century, where learning can be more interactive and engaging, thus improving the overall educational experience for students.

We understand the concerns about distractions and misuse of phones. Therefore, a responsible and transparent policy on phone usage can be implemented. This policy could focus on times when phones are permitted, such as during breaks or specific educational purposes, while still restricting their use during teaching hours unless necessary.

By allowing phone usage under these guidelines, we can ensure that students remain connected, informed, and safe. It is crucial that we modernize our schools' policies to reflect the demands of contemporary society, ensuring the safety and preparedness of all students.

Join me in urging the Des Moines school district to revise their policies and recognize the essential role mobile phones play in ensuring student safety and success. Please sign this petition if you believe in making our schools safer and more technologically inclusive.
