Heffley lake Community Association - Road Safety
The Issue
The Heffley Lake Community Association — Request for Road Safety Improvements.
The Heffley Lake community has become busier, which has increased safety concerns for residents, visitors, pets, and wildlife. Directors have identified several traffic and road‑related issues that need attention. Please sign this petition to help convince the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to make safety improvements. We intend to submit the letter and petition to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) by May 25, 2026.
1.Reduce speed limits and add traffic calming
Many residents along arterial roads (similar to Whitecroft and Sun Peaks) feel the current 50 km/h limit is too fast and often ignored. We are petitioning to reduce the speed limit to 30 km/h on these arterial roads and/or install traffic calming measures (for example, speed humps).
The following arterial roads are of concern:
- Heffley Lake Road
- Lake Bay Drive
- Mill Bay Road
- Golden Horn Road
- Shaw Road
- Fawnhill Road
- Lower Heffley Lake Road
- Fischer Lake Road.
- Yates Road
- Lakeview Road.
- Lakeshore Road
2. Cattle guards
Some cattle guards on Heffley Louis Creek Road are in poor condition.
Beginning at Heffley Creek (#1 to #4). Guard #2 is in poor condition and needs immediate repair; guards #1 and #3 also require attention. Guard #4 is an excellent installation and should be the model for all guards.
Traffic on Heffley–Louis Creek Road has increased, including heavier vehicles /speeds; this greater volume accelerates wear and creates potential hazards. The cattle guards should be repaired or replaced to reflect current traffic conditions and improve safety.
3. Install black-ice warning signage.
There are frequent winter accidents on Heffley–Louis Creek Road caused by black ice, weather, and/or speed. Argo crews know all the typical black-ice locations (especially the lake‑adjacent and shaded stretches) and treat them, when possible, but treatment is not always sufficient.
We will request that Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) install permanent “Warning: Black Ice “signs at known trouble spots to help reduce winter collisions.
Supporting evidence
Lowering speed limits in residential areas has been shown to reduce accident risk (studies indicate up to a ~30% reduction). Communities that implement comprehensive traffic calming programs report significant safety improvements.
Call to action
Please sign this petition so the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) can prioritize these practical safety measures for the Heffley Lake community.
Thank you for your support.
